f1france Felipe Massa Wins Formula One French Grand Prix. Leads Championship

On Sunday, Felipe Massa wanted Ferrari’s 200th pole position but teammate and World Champion denied him that in qualifying. He made up for it with a win at Magny-Cours giving him the lead in the drivers’ championship. Kimi took the lead from the start and both Ferraris walked away from the field in the opening laps with consistent fast laps over the rest of the field, but on the 33rd lap, Raikkonen’s right exhaust collector detached itself from the the manifold, flapping around and threatening to cause bigger problems. Massa moved up to first but Raikkonen nursed his Ferrari home to second despite his motor threatening to shut down in the closing laps.

The big story of the day was Jarno Trulli and Toyota’s third place podium position, as Trulli was under pressure from McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen for the whole race and both drivers survived their wheels touching during a desperate and well defended last lap pass attempt by Kovalainen. McLaren’s supposed wunderkind, Lewis Hamilton finished tenth, which wasn’t bad considering thirteenth place grid position due to his ten position penalty from the last GP. With his ride potentially on the line, Renault’s Nelson Piquet (Jr) pulled out all the stops and put on a memorable drive staying in front of his ex World Champion teammate, Fernando Alonso, with a seventh place that will at least justify his place on the Renault team for a few more races. Massa leads the Drivers’ Championship, Ferrari is top constructor and BMW is in second place but its still tight for the top 4 drivers. British GP at Silverstone is July 6th—set your Tivos.
