If you’ve been holding off on those CF body panels for awhile in lieu of being able to afford to fuel your vehicle, you may be in luck. The guys over at Motor Authority are saying Nissan, Honda and a few carbon fiber manufacturers are working together on ways to make the light-weight material cheap enough to produce on massive scales, as in, for everyday production vehicles. What makes the project likely to succeed is the fact that the Japanese government is chipping in $20 million for the project, meaning that lighter, more fuel efficient cars may be on the way by 2015 or sooner. How much lighter? The companies are shooting for 40 percent as a target. That’s cool and all, but we don’t look forward to the growth of the rash of ill-fitted CF hoods on Civics everywhere. There’s no cream for that.
