I predict that in several decades people will look back at the McMerc SLR in absolute awe. Some cars — like the jaguar XJ-S — take twenty years to sink in. My point? Despite it’s odd looks, I really dig the SLR. But, as you know, Mercedes wants to stop smoking the fossil fuel pipe by 2015. Meaning that there is no place in their portfolio for a supercharged V8 that (probably) gets 3-4 mpg. With that in mind, Mercedes and McLaren are having one more go at hypercar supremacy. Meet the SLR Speedster (no pics available, the SLR Roadster is pictured). The boffins are removing the air conditioning and power windows in order to shed close to 400 pounds. Besides, who needs ‘em when the car has no roof and no windscreen? That’s right friends — you’ll be able to cruise up to 217 mph with absolutely nothing blocking the bugs from your teeth. Only 75 SLR Speedsters will be built and then Mercedes and McLaren collaborate no more. Er, actually they’ll still be building cars together for racing, actually.
