If you’ve driven an RS4 — or an R8 — you know that the hopped up familial 4.2-liter V8 is one of the best engines ever created. And that’s not over-stating it. Word has come down the car blog pipe from Car to Autoblog that the next RS4 will get a force-fed V6. Shock! Horror! Sadness! But wait… As Audi points out, the first RS4 featured a turbo-boosted V6 (and the RS2 — the first Audi RS vehicle — featured a turbo’d 5). It wasn’t until the last RS4 showed up with a V8 that BMW and Lexus followed suit. Audi feels confident that its competitors will follow suit, again. Hey, why not? And why are they doing this — besides mega-high gas prices? Audi claims they want a high-torque at low rpm car. A supercharger will certainly delivery that, without question. Though one of the things we love most about the current RS4 is its high power at high rpm lunacy. There’s no word (yet) on power but if the “regular” S4 is to have 350 horses, look for the RS4 to be in the 450 hp neighborhood, with around 400 lb-ft of torque. [Thanks Autoblog!]
