challenger badge Straight Line Hoonage: Dodge Challenger Drag Package

If, like us, you couldn’t justify the1,000 plus mile hike to Bandimere Speedway in Colorado this weekend, you probably missed the debut of the Challenger Drag Package. Fear not. We’ve got the juicy details. Dodge shaved a mind-boggling 1,000 lbs off of the production SRT-8 car by ditching need-not pieces like the airbags, side-impact cross members, the heater and A/C, windshield wipers and just about everything else that wasn’t crucial to going dead fast. Other tweaks included shortening the wheel base by half an inch and utilizing solid engine mounts to deal with the stress of repeated quarter or eighth mile beatings. The cars will be available with the 6.1 or 5.7-liter Hemi. The 5.7 should put out around 390 horses, while the big job will nail down somewhere in the 425 range. The other option is a 5.9-liter Magnum Wedge, though with less power and more weight, we have a feeling this option will be left to the collectors. Starting in the mid to low $30k’s, these cars are the cheapest way to get into Comp, Super Stock or Stock NHRA classes.
