Here’s a little math to annoy and confuse you. As Americans, we have the problem of constantly having to convert the devil damn metric system into useful and comprehensible English. 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds — is that fast? Dunno. And here’s a trick for roughly approximating distances using the Fibonacci Sequence. Five or six of you might remember the Fibonacci Sequence from 8th grade Algebra. Don’t worry, we don’t. However, any numerologists out there are way into it. Here’s how it works: in a sequence starting with 0, add the two preceding terms. Like so:
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21…
So, 2 miles is approximately 3 kilometers and 21 kilometers is approximately 13 miles. Go Golden Ratio, go! Of course, figuring out longer distances can be a pain. Yeah, 987 kilometers is about 610 miles, but who wants to do the math? So, just do it the easy way — multiply the kilometers by 6 and move the decimal point. 987(6) = 5,922, or roughly 592 miles. In truth, Fibonacci’s method is more accurate (987 kilometers is 613.29 miles), but the quick and dirty is both quicker and dirtier. We crawl back in our hole now. [Futility Closet]
