datsun280z Picture of the Day: Datsun 280Z 2+2

Yesterday’s POTD was the quite epic Jensen Interceptor SP. Not only did Levy’s dad own an orange one just like in the picture (hell, that may even be his car), but the Levy’s SP was stolen by an attendant Ferris Bueller-style from long term airport parking and totaled. Now, my dad didn’t have anything super exotic like one of only 232 Interceptor SPs made (and one of only 33 Tangerine ones!) he still liked fast cars. When I was born, the old man had the 2+2 version of Datsun’s fabled Z (though I beleive I came home from the hospital in a Buick). Essentially, the 280 was just a 260 with a bigger 2.8-liter straight-6 and (reliable) fuel injection. In fact, Datsun continued to sell the 260Z in much of the rest of the world. I remember my dad was miffed that Datsun didn’t offer a 5-speed as an option until 1977, two years after he bought the car. However, he always referred to his z as, “Nothing but an engine and a steering wheel.” Some of my earliest car memories are being strapped into the front seat (hey — it was the 70s) and bombing over Decker Canyon. Also, at the time the 2+2 was considered kinda ugly and much less desirable. I have to say that while the 2+2 does get fairly far away from the iconic purity of the 240Z’s form, from the doors back the 2+2 has a wonderful near-Italian GT look. These days, the 2+2 looks pretty damn cool. Shame about those “park bench” bumpers. And my Dad’s car had wire wheels and rear window louvers.
