biscayne1 The Generals Motorama Dream Cars Are Coming To Pebble Beach

What’s a Dream Car you ask? My father used to tell me about lining up outside car dealers in the 1950s in anticipation of the latest model year’s offering. What’s the 1956 Chevy going to look like? How big will the ‘58 Caddy’s fins be? Three feet? My, how times have changed. With this type of hysteria surrounding GM’s every move, it’s no surpise that they took their show on the road. The happening was called Motorama and it was a travelling General Motors-only car show. The stars were the dream cars — special machines that envisioned all the glitzy, rocket-fueled post-war optimism, enthusiasm and chutzpah a baby boomer could ever need — and that Harley Earl could dream up. Fifteen of these “visions of the future” will be appearing at Pebble Beach. Above is the Chevrolet Biscayne, looking every inch the 4-door Corvette we never got. We’re leading with the Chevy — instead of say the museum piece Cadillac Le Mans — because the Biscayne was almost lost forever to the big crusher in the sky. Luckily, super-collector Joe Bortz. The Biscayne was supposed to be crushed in 1959, but as it was just dropped off at the wrecking yeard, the Chevy was simply cut into pieces and stacked up in the back. Bortz’s son found the pile of fiberglass rubble in 1988, and they’ve been readying it ever since for its Concours debut. Don’t you just love happy endings?

I swear I see a Corvair in the rear quarters (always looking at the rear quarters…). Will you be joining Alex and Davey at the Concours? I am taking my grandfather (who was an open wheel racer from the 50’s - early 80’s and taught me everything!) who’s running out of time.
BTW, I have followed your writings since DAF vs. FAF, and consider Davey the Mark Morford of Auto Journalism (a good thing in my book). I assume you will be wearing the Hüsker Dü shirt…

Sadly, it looks like I’m not making it.

But, $5 says Davey will be in a Husker Du shirt.

And of course, thanks for the kind words
