The third annual Summer X Games Rally Super Special lived up to the hype with an action packed series of rounds that made for great live TV—this Sunday America got a dose of rally action instead of golf on ABC Sports. But it made for spectacular television with the almost figure eight stadium course and its massive center field over-under jump wreaking havoc with drivers and their cars. It ended up more like a demolition derby than a rally race. At least at the extreme end of the business, for the 21st century, energy drinks have replaced booze and cigarettes as the de-facto race team sponsors and X Games 14 was a battle of the caffeine and taureinated sodas with Rockstar, Red Bull, Monster and NOS on board. After a series of carnage ridden heats, last year’s gold medal winner and Top Gear USA co-host, Tanner Foust, limped his Rockstar Energy Drink 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car home for the silver. Foust was denied a repeat of his 2007 X Games Rally Super Special gold medal by Travis Pastrana in his Subaru Rally Team USA Red Bull Racing 2008 Subaru STI in a rematch of their thrilling 2007 X Games semi-final race. The two bronze medals, yes two, went to Travis’ SRTUSA partner, Ken Block, and X Games BMX rider, Dave Mirra both backed by Monster Energy Drink. They shared the bronze as their cars were both out of action and they couldn’t race for the medal. NOS Energy made their showing in spectacular style when their driver, Andrew Comrie Picard front flipped his Mitsubishi EVO IX on the stadium jump.
