914 Four Banger Porsches?

According to Thomas Krickelberg, head powertrain engineer for Porsche, the precision sports car company is prepared to go there if environmental and governmental concerns make it necessary. Speaking at the release of the newest 911, Krickelberg said that the current generation flat six was designed so that it could be constructed with two fewer cylinders. The company would likely have to resort to forced induction to make up for the loss of displacement, and the dip in power would likely lead to a lighter chassis overall. Hmm, a turbo flat-four. That’s been Subaru’s recipe for domination for years and years. Would we mourn the passing of Porsche’s legendary flat six? Absolutely. Would we look forward to a turbo-four wedged in a lightweight chassis? You know it. The question now becomes, 912, 914 or 924? Or hell, what about a 944? Ooooh! 968! You have to love 3.0-liter 4 bangers that kick out 236 hp.
