For the uninitiated out there, the Porsche 914 is an oddly-shaped car that’s got a little too much Beetle DNA and not enough 911. Don’t worry, I was with you until heir Lieberman sentenced me to some serious Wikipedia time. Turns out the little flat-four car managed a 6th place finish overall at the 1970 Le Mans and swiping first in its class at the same time. The top 5 spots were held down by the likes of V12 Ferrari 512S’s with 560 horsepower and the also designed by PIech Porsche 917Ks (you have seen Steve McQueen’s Le Mans, right?). The 914/6 GT laid down a whopping 110 ponies. There is nothing more fiendish than nearly beating cars with five times your horsepower. Nothing. We’re hoping some of that pure awesome finds its way into the rumored collaboration between Porsche and VW for an inexpensive Elise killer. With Porsche openly discussing the likelihood of four cylinders in its future, there’s a good chance a low(er) cost Porsche may be in the works. In the mean time, you’ll find me on Ebay looking for a 914. [Autoblog]
