gti QFTW: Mr. Justin Keeps his GTI

Hey all you people with your fancy sports cars and uber-sedans as your keeper cars — how are you going to find parts for those exotic, expensive whips in 20-30 years? Exactly — eBay China. That’s why I’m going with my very own car — the current Volkswagen GTI! This car likely represents the end of the line for old school hot hatches. And yes, I call it old school despite the fact that it’s twice as heavy as the OG GTI, the new, turbo’d car channels the spirit of the first GTI by giving the driver quite a lot for not a lot. But the MkV GTI also offers the size, comfort, and convenience of a modern car. When you add on fantastic steering, exceptionally good handling for a front-wheel drive car, and the transmission of the future — DSG — it’s win, win, and more win all the way around. And how about those tartan plaid seats? Call me crazy [Ed Note: or lazy] but the original GTI has recieved more praise than Idi Amin gave himself. Seriously, more praise than almost any other car I can think of. Damn straight it was a keeper. Just imagine what they’ll be saying about my car in thirty-years.

Tell us, Mr. Lieberman, how many times was your car in the shop for it’s birthing problems? I remember a few comments from you about this here-and-there on TTAC. :D

Its actually Justin’s pick. Can’t say its a bad one but even though I was one of the OG faithful of the OG Rabbit GT not sure it will hold up for 30 years or I’d want to keep it that long. Though you might have said the same about the Foust 912E that inspired the question.

I’d argue my M Coupe will stay together since its a pretty simple piece with a majority of parts shared between the high volume Z4 and a motor shared with five years of M3s. And it has just one clutch…

Love the GTI, wouldn’t want it for 30 years.

Rebuilding a DSG 30 years from now is gonna be cause for suicide.
