The wait is over. Ford’s never ending teaser campaign essentially resulted in the entirety of the online auto media screaming, “Stop! Please stop!” Today it stops. And you know what? That’s a good looking Mustang. We don’t know too much at this moment, but we’re posting the propaganda laden press release after the jump. However, we will know a lot more tomorrow evening after Ford “reveals” the new pony car standard to all the journalists gathered for the LA Auto Show. Like before, they’re starting with V6 and GT (V8) models. The big diff is that the V6 (sans “Pony Package”) now has fog lights. They’re are located in the lower fascia (bumper) while the V8’s have shrank but are still in the grill. Smack in the center of that same grill you’ll also find the first new Mustang emblem since 1964. The hood now features a “powerdome” bulge and the rear fenders are way pumped up. Like, bulgy. Which is fine, because the Mustang will now ship with bigger wheels. 17s are standard and they go all the way to 19-inches. For some more design analysis, hit the jump.

Blue 2010 GT on top, red 2008 GT on the bottom. As you can see, the new car is much more bumper intensive than the outgoing model. Also, (thankfully) the rearview mirrors are no longer black plastic pieces of afterthought. Hey, even if the new ones are only painted plastic, it’s a huge improvement. The greenhouse looks to be essentially unchanged, and that’s fine with us. There’s more cut lines, especially around the hood. There’s almost something Camaro-ish about all the angularity. What appear to be black plastic sills should help visually reduce the new ‘Stang’s vertical height. Overhangs appear to be a bit shorter in both directions, too. Er, or not.

The front end is much more shark-like. There’s something resembling a face and a gaped mouth. You can also see how the turn signal indicators have been incorporated into the headlamps.

The rear end has a geometric thing going on — trapezoids on trapezoids. You can also see the optional all-glass roof. Like the sills, the black surround in back helps make the new Mustang’s butt look smaller. The badge on the trunk is enormous — it’s the same height as the license plate!

There’s also the interior, which looks nice. Especially those seats. Ford is claiming it’s way, way, way improved. They’re saying stuff like, “world-class materials and execution.” Here’s hoping. And judging by what the Blue Oval Boys were able to do with the Flex, the interior should indeed be pretty sweet. And what about the all important engine? And suspension? Some very good news on that front. The 2010 Mustang GT is essentially the Bullitt. Very smart on Ford’s part. Ask anyone that’s ever driven a Bullitt: this is fabulous news. I’ll go ahead and lump myself into that group — for as I said, “In my mind the dark green thug is the distillation of everything that makes a Mustang a Mustang.” Therefore the new Mustang will be a proper Mustang from day one. Hooray! Most likely. Anyhow, press release on the next page and more impressions/photos tonight!

I see it’s a case of evolution rather than revolution. Oh well, still looks nice, which is good because they are quite ubiquitous in the southern college town in which I live.

  2. John says:

The 1974-1982 Mustang had a different pony emblem altogether. The pony appeared to be trotting along instead of galloping, hinting at significantly reduced performance.

“The 2010 Mustang 4.6-liter V-8 benefits from innovations from the popular Bullitt model. Power has increased to 315 horsepower.”

Um, isn’t the new Camaro V-6 supposed to have 300 Hp and the V8 over 400? Isn’t this V8 from Ford a little under powered?

  4. Justin Berkowitz says:

    @mievere1992:

    Underpowered? Well, yes and no.

The Camaro SS will be really tough to keep up with at 422 hp with a Corvette engine, no question about that.

But the V6 Camaro, despite the claimed 6.2 second 0-60 time, is probably going to be a little less than stellar. That 3.6 liter V6 with Direct Injection is the same engine that’s in the Cadillac CTS and it makes most of its power at the top of the rev band.

Keep in mind that the Bullitt Mustang (with 315 hp) already is faster 0-60 than the SRT8 Challenger. It’s definitely a quick car.

Also, Ford is rolling out the new generation of Mustang engines next year. No doubt the 4.0 is behind the times. It does at least sound good for a V6.

There will definitely be a turbocharged V6 with around 350 horsepower. Whether they go that route with a 4-banger or V8, I don’t know.

  5. Jonny Lieberman says:

And let’s not — NOT — forget the 6.2-liter V8 in the Raptor that will be making it’s way into the Mustang at some point

that’s (at least) 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

One more thing — we live in a time where 315 hp on regular fuel is “underpowered” God bless the USA!

    and the Germans.
