bmwbavariagrab Fools Gold: 1972 BMW Bavaria

The Bavaria: the only BMW I can think of that has a real name (not numbers) besides the Isetta. And what is it? It’s to the 5-Series what the 2002 is to the 3-Series. The simpler, more honest predecessor. Look at the gauges! That’s German stark design, baby. The Bavaria was meant to get BMW into a lower price point than the company’s other “big” cars, so it came in at a $5000 price point in 1970. This particular car is an especially unusual version, because it’s an automatic. That means I really, really wouldn’t buy it. But I like the chrome “Automatic” script on the trunk lid. Being a 1972, it was the first year for BMW’s 3.0 liter inline six — carbureted for 72 and 73 — so in this car it made a healthy 178 hp. It also had four wheel disc brakes and front and rear independent suspensions. Unfortunately, while rare for being an auto, that’s a total dealbraker on a vintage BMW. Otherwise, a fine example in what appears to be great shape. [eBay Motors]
