VW took the stampeding steer stunt one step farther this year by unveiling its Blue Sport Concept amidst a torrent of charging children. No word on whether or not the kids were free range but the mid-engine diesel drop-top looks pretty damn tasty. Depending on which translation you believe, VW says this roadster should be able to turn out a mind-boggling 45-55 mpg U.S. while still delivering decent handling and performance numbers. The turbo diesel mounted behind the front seats dishes out a reasonable 180 horsepower, and while there’s no talk of a manual tranny, there is talk of a six-speed double clutch gear box. That unit helps to get the car to 60 in 6.2 seconds. Of course, the 258 lb-ft of torque on tap helps, too. Enjoy the flip-book gallery of the unveil. Consider it the po’ mans video. Really reminds me of the 914.
As a diesel driver for the last 27 years who likes good mileage (one Rabbit and two Jettas) and as a two seat roadster fan (MG-TDs, bug eyed Sprites, etc.) the VW Blue Sport appears to be the type of car I’ve wanted for years.
I have a Diesel Jetta (2005.5) that gets over 50 MPG on the hwy. The Blue Sport is just what I have been waiting for…sporty looks, great MPG, and the dependability of a diesel. Way to go VW. Now hurry up and release it to the public!
