isuzuvehicross 1 Fools Gold Twofer Tuesday: 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS

While considered a ’shocking’ design in its day, the VehiCROSS has aged fairly well in the ten years since it was designed. Okay, I admit that the face of the car is still busted. But I like it, and like the Axiom also featured today, the crossover concept was ahead of its time. The VehiCROSS was always reported to be extremely capable off road, with a computer controlled all-wheel-drive system in addition to a locked-differential low gear four-wheel-drive system. That’s business. As a result, and because of their “unique” styling, these have held onto their values very well. Most of them change hands for over $10,000. The car here, with 75,000 miles, is offered at $8500. Sounds like a Mercedes E-Class. [Source: Autotrader.com]

I have a weird fascination with this car, but I’ve heard the engines are crap (and it only came with an auto), but damn, they look cool in Dakar trim: http://www.tubusracing.com/images/vehicross.jpg

I too have had and have a crush on this vehicle. I remember when they were first put on display at the auto show with a Burton snowboard Paw print on the side and two boards on top. What a perfect set up for a quick run to the mountains. The yellow paint scheme is my fav. Would love to get one and put and eclipse-ish engine in it with with a bit of suspension. That would be a trail killer.

I have a 1999 with 48,000 miles on it. I have owned it for over 7 years now and haven’t had anything go wrong with it. It has the Bulletproof 3.5L from the
Trooper. Actually, all the running gear is from the Trooper. There are only a couple draw backs from the Vehicross. Blind spots galore (but you get used to them), very firm ride (again, you will get used to it), fuel economy isn’t great (but has a 22.5 gallon tank so you can go more miles between fill ups), no inside fuel or rear hatch release (you actually have to get outside and use your key) after market kits are available.
There are positives for it as well. Most unique looking vehicle ever. Everyone stares at it (good and bad), great sound system, beautiful seats (Recaro), rear seats are roomy and they recline individually, tiny turning diameter(I can do a U-turn anywhere), fast, excellent stopping distance, T-O-D torque-on-demand works incredibly well, and with the foot of snow Seattle received recently, I was free to drive anywhere I wanted. People were stuck everywhere but I just drove by with a smile!
I removed all of my exterior badging, nobody knows what it is and all I ever see are confused people staring at me.

I’ll be the first to admit my ignorance about the running gear, I just thought I’d read somewhere the engines are lucky to last 100,000 miles, and my sister had a Rodeo that was on the verge of imploding at 96k when she traded it in. But I’m ready to be convinced otherwise, I really like these cars…
