Obama’s New Caddy… a Diesel?

Say huh? Well, it works like this. Wired re-broke the story that a new Presidential limo (sexless codename: Stagecoach) is all set to debut at Obama’s inauguration. I say “re-broke” because it’s not exactly new-news, you know? Anyhow, as we in the “media” are apt to do, everyone starts “breaking” the story. Like Wonkette. And there just isn’t much to report. No one from Cadillac or the Secret Service will give away any details other than “thick glass, thick doors, free wi-fi, attack proof.” SF Gate says a little. The truth of the matter seems to be that Obama’s ride is very much like W’s limo save for the fact that the C-pillar looks as if it’s been cherry picked from a 300C. Now, if you remember back eight four years, there was lotso speculation that W’s limo was in fact comprised of lots of heavy duty truck components — i.e. the car was more Escalade than sedan. Not so says the Wired article. Er, well, actually no one will say anything of substance. Here’s a GM spokeshole, “The president is not riding in a medium-duty truck, nor he is riding in a sedan.” So, it’s a… Presidential limo. But, here’s what pricked our ears up — from CNN.com, “Car enthusiasts believe the overweight vehicle burns diesel and will have low mileage.” We do? Two closing points, will it have decent mileage as far as 5-ton vehicles go (that’s what “we” think it weighs)? And finally, is our president really going to ride around in a diesel? Really?
