VW Dakar Touareg

I. Giniel DeVilliers and Dirk von Zitewitz won the 2009 Paris-Dakar in a VW Touareg. DeVilliers von Zitzewitz crossed the finish ramp 8m59s ahead of teammates Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford. Volkswagen not only finished one-two, but made history by sealing the victory with a diesel in the car class since the event’s inception in 1979. [Source: Racecar]

II.  Fiat and Chrysler are in talks to form a partnership that would give Fiat a partial stake in Chrysler’s sinking boat. Chrysler hopes to use small car engines, transmissions and platforms from Fiat to help expedite its restructuring plan. The plan is for Chrysler to use Fiat to appeal to a more eco-concious market with a series of small FWD cars. [Source: Autoweek]

III. Renault’s F1 boss Flavio Briatore slammed FIA’s decision to continue with the development and implementation of the KERS system. According to Briatore, it’s a money pit that teams experiencing financial cuts shouldn’t have to deal with. “…It’s something which doesn’t bring any good to us – it brings only costs. This is sure,” Briatore told English TV station ITV. [Source: ITV]

IV. NASCAR fan favorite and two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip says he’s looking to retire before the 2010 race season if his five-year winless streak continues. Waltrip, who won the infamous 2001 500 that killed Dale Earnhardt, decided that it isn’t worth continuing if he can’t be competitive anymore. [Source: ESPN]

V. Team Penske announced Will Power (we are not making that up) as their interim driver for the 2009 season. Penske’s principal driver Helio Castroneves will spend the ’09 season awaiting the results of his tax-evasion trial, scheduled to start March 2. [Source: ESPN]

VI. The UK’s CAR Magazine got an inside look at the new Porsche museum opening in Stuttgart, Germany January 31. Check out the goosebump-worthy photo gallery here. Reports are that the museum cost in the neighborhood of $130 million, or roughly twice the original estimate. In case any of you were looking for a reason to go to Stuttgart, there you have it.
