headers Picture of the Day: Headers

There’s just something about a set of well-crafted headers. The exhaust side of an engine tends to get much less attention than the pretty-boy intake side, but it’s those pipes that gives a mill its voice. Tucked down beside the inner fender close to the block, they sit like gnarled muscle under the rest of the sheet metal up stairs. Truth be told, you can gain a good portion of otherwise restricted power by replacing stock bits for something that breathes a little easier, too. Why all this musing on the dump-side of a motor? Let’s just say the Mark III Saga is about to get a little more interesting.

Nice. Have fun with the inevitable broken studs and busted knuckles.

The 460’s common enough, but was it hard to find something to fit the Hot Rod Lincoln?

I’m amazed at how widely header prices can vary.

There are 3 vendors on earth that make headers that’ll fit my Ford’s 390 and engine bay, and none are all that cheap. Compare that to a Chevelle or Nova 350, where they’re like $150.

Ahh, you’re one who knows this trade well. It took many a night of frantic searching before I found a vendor that makes a decently priced, solidly built example of a 460 header. They start at $550 a set bare, but if you’ve got seven Benji’s burning a hole in your pocket they’ll powder coat them in and out for you. Talk about never rust.

Hop over to Ford Powertrain Applications. They may just have what you’re looking for. Ask for Dan. He’s a good guy that seems to know his trade. Check the link:

    More soon(ish).

    Yep.

    They’re one of the 3.

My other two options are Crites shorty headers and a set of full-length Hooker Super-comps that have primaries as big as my current exhaust.

I’ve also got a line on a friend who could TIG me a set of custom ones…but I’m still trying to figure out what it’d cost me.
