Ever run into something so immobilizingly frustrating you can’t even begin to form your argument? For me, it’s usually the kind of stuff that spews from racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise ignorant jackasses’ mouths. My four years in a fine, upstanding liberal arts school go straight out the window and I revert to a Cro-Magnon style desire to beat the stupid out of my opponent. With rocks, not words. The recent cash for clunkers craze has caught me in the same vein. Every time I try to work up a calm, well-thought argument, I break down into a keyboard-smashing rage. I just can’t abide the thought of discarding perfectly good, running vehicles to buy cars and trucks that required a boundless expenditure of energy and resources to create, regardless of how efficient they are. Thankfully, there are more intelligent folk out there to field this argument. Folk like good Neil Winton over at the Detroit News. Winton has managed to work up a clear, concise argument against scrappage programs by using what people ultimately care about. Money. Hop over to DETNews to have a read. Tell ‘em we sent you.
