2010 Ford Shelby GT500

Hardcore Blue-Oval boys were a little dismayed when the power figures for the 2010 Mustang rolled out. While the other players in the neo-Muscle world were playing in the 400 horsepower park, the formerly bad-boy GT got stuck with the same lowly 4.6-liter V8 as previous generations, leaving the car with just 315 horsepower. That’s less than the V6 in Nissan’s 370Z. Embarrassing. If you believe the rumors flying around the Web, Ford’s been hard at work on a legitimate successor to the long-gone 5.0-liter V8 that once powered the mighty pony. No matter how hard we pushed when we were in Detroit for the Lincoln MKS and MKT, we couldn’t get Ford’s engineers to come clean on the engine, code-named Coyote. An interview in Drive suggests we could see the 400 horsepower mill in the F-150 as soon as next year and the Mustang by 2011. Now we’re talking. [Source: MotorAuthority]

    They’re going to be in an awkward position when a bunch of EcoBoost engines are making more power than the 4.6L.

    Hopefully the lineup will go:
    Base = Something less crappy than the 4.0L V6.
    GT = EcoBoost at 350hp (and 28mpg)
    GT350 = 5.0L V8, ~400hp
    GT500 = 6.2L V8, 450-500hp

    And for the Love of God, the GT needs a 6-speed.
