So good it hurts.

Well Fiends, a long and storied chapter of my life has just come to a close. Just this hour I sold my POS Civic. You may remember my ode to that car from way back when I was a green Fiend, and in it I proudly proclaimed that until a manufacturer came up with an equally efficient, fun to drive car, I’d hang onto the keys. It’s funny how things change over time. Since I penned that post, I’ve moved 300 miles from my father, bought my grandfather’s home and married the most beautiful woman in the world. Suddenly cash for a new Wilwood brake kit or weekend track days is all but non-existent. What’s worse, I hadn’t driven the car in over a month due to an increasing number of vehicles that need reviewing, and after the purchase of the Spit, the Civic had been sleeping outside under a tree. We all know what happens to a car when it doesn’t get driven, so rather than sentence it to a long, slow decay, I sold it. It’s easy to underestimate the emotional attachment to sheet metal, but as I sit here fingering 29 $100 bills, I can’t help but acknowledge that knot in my gut. The hours I wrenched on that car were paled by the ones I spent tearing through the apexes of Rockbridge County at dusk with those that would become the best men at my wedding riding shotgun. The Civic taught me to never underestimate a vehicle, no matter how homely or underpowered, and that nearly everything with four wheels has something to give the driver. For that, and the infinite amount of fun I had at the wheel, I’m incredibly grateful. Now to find something turbocharged with five doors for the wifey to drive.

If you have any locally, the remaining 09 Mazdaspeed 3s should be available at a very reasonable price – locally we have Sports for $19k and GTs for $22k (before TTL), and I haven’t regretted the purchase for a second :)

My ‘06 WRXagon was $19.5k with 8k miles on the clock in August ‘07 (it’s got almost 68k now). 30-50k mile examples are more like $14-17k.

So far, nothing be routine maintenance (and plenty of spirited driving).

Mrs. Mad_Science has already decided that when the time comes, she’d rather replace the engine/trans at least once than sell it.

(Jeff expected me to rationalize a GT500)

Had my 97 Talon for 12 years (bought new in 96) and finally put the stock engine back under the hood before selling it on Craigslist last winter. Needed the money to buy my second Galant VR4.

As much as I love my new daily driver, I still miss that Talon…

And so it passes into that sweet twilight were all those other fond memories reside, Rockbridge, Goshen, and its legend will grow there too.
