Impreza Oil Burner

File this one under the just-not-fair file. Way across the pond, Subie fans can opt for a thrifty 2.0-liter diesel engine with 150 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers aren’t exactly disappointing, especially when you throw in the lofty 47.9 mpg figure. We’re guessing that’s mpg UK, which tallies out to around 40 mpg here in the states without accounting for differences in test cycles. We’d absolutely drive an all-wheel drive oil-burner with serious fuel-economy if Subaru gave us the chance, but the company has zero plans to send the diesel our way any time soon. Fans of the hybrid-besting fuel will just have to stick with the new Audi A3 TDI for their all-wheel drive jollies. [Source: Subaru]

1.) A3 TDI will be FWD S-Tronic only (see http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2009/09/2010-audi-a3-tdi-priced-at-30775.html)

2.) The WRX gets horrible mileage (18/25) and sucks premium. Which is fine because it rules and has 2 hp shy of a Honda Fit’s power over this diesel. But it also only makes 244 lbft of torque.

3.) I’d drive it too, but keep in mind that the A3 TDI is $30,000 for a Golf-sized wagon. The Subie version of that wouldn’t sell.

I have been waiting for an AWD oil burner. I would buy it today people! Ideally it’d be a Legacy Wagon (I know, I’m totally dreaming now!). Would it not be sooo awesome to have COBB tuning get their mitts on a diesel?

If it were an option, an AWD turbodiesel wagon with 3 pedals would be the replacement for the current WRXagon.

In the absence of that, the plan is to just keep the Subie through at least 1 engine/trans replacement.
