Yesterday we speculated that because of the never-ending horsepower wars, 997 Turbo owners would be miffed that their $126,200 steed packs less poniage than a Shelby GT500 (480 hp vs. 500 hp) that costs 2/3 less. Then there’s the fact that a certain Japanese upstart has cooked the Turbo’s goose on Porsche’s home turf, the Nurburgring. Not to be outdone, Porsche will be boosting the Turbo’s power to a GT-R beating 500 horses (though there are some who thing Godzilla makes more power than the advertised 480 hp). The Turbo is achieving this power bump via new direct-injection technology, which should also improve the MPGs. Look for larger combustion chambers, a hotter cam and new pumps, too. In addition to the extra thrust, the 2009 Turbo will also get Porsche’s quick shifting Doppel Kupplung (dual -clutch) transmission, just like the “lesser” models.
