topless-murano Topless Nissan Murano? Why Car Gods, Why?

Sometimes, you just have to go with your gut reaction. When we first heard that Nissan is mulling a topless version of its Murano SUV, we thought the fine folks at Edmunds had hit the crack pipe. Honestly, we’re baffled as to how the idea of removing the roof structure of a vehicle prone to roll-over ever got past the wet-bar napkin stage. Slated for sale in 2011, the topless four-door will likely cost close to $40,000 in 2011. Thanks to a folding top and related mechanicals, the Murano Drophead Coupe Convertible will have little of the wine-tasting/antiquing abilities that set it apart from the crowd.  And it should handle like an SUV with massive cowlshake. It’s all the bad hair days and low trunk space of a Miata combined with the driving hell of a Hummer. What’s next? A  Yugo powered Escalade? But let me leave you with one counterpoint, cutting the roof off the otherwise forgettable PT Cruiser makes it a semi-decent ride. Just saying. [Edmunds]
