Fernando Alonso returned to the top of the podium with Renault for the first time since winning the world championship a couple of years ago at the historic Singapore GP night race this weekend. The amazing track around the Marina Bay area of Singapore put 100,000 fans front row center for the Formula One spectacle during the first ever night race on Asian soil. Felipe Massa started on pole but a pit stop gone wrong—an electronic malfunction had him leaving the pit with the fuel hose attached, then a drive through penalty led to a 13th place finish. Teammate, Kimi Raikkonen crashed out while in 4th place two laps from the end so Ferrari’s hopes for the Constructors’ Championship are all but lost. Alonso was perfectly situated to take advantage of the first safety car period caused by teammate Nelson Piquet’s big crash and he built a huge lead. Even with the second safety car deployment in lap 51 taking a chunk out of his lead, Alonso showed his World Champion’s form and the returned pace of his Renault by taking it home for the win. Nico Rosberg took second for Williams and, with Massa his closest challenger for the World Championship out of the hunt, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton played a safe race to take third. Were it not for the Safety Car deployments and mistakes in the pits, the Singapore GP could have been a predictable yawn-fest. While the floodlit city street course may have looked amazing for the on-track spectators, it was all too video game-like on TV and looked like the cars were racing in a tunnel half the time. Still we’d like to be trackside next year as the atmosphere seemed to be electric. Full race details at [Formula1.com]
