peugeot Le Mans: Goodbye V10, V12

When signs of the times butt heads with predictable racing, somethings got to give. In this case LMP1-class Le Mans sereis cars will not be reving their V10s and V12s to eardrum splitting redlines come 2011. The move comes because according to the man in charge of the rules, this is what the manufacturers want. Says Daniel Poissenot, “Talking to the manufacturers, we understand that we have to have engines that use less fuel, create less emissions and less noise.” We don’t believe him, either. We’re thinkig the real reason is that Audi (and to a lesser extent Peugeot) is so ahead of the curb that no one can even kinda compete with their many-cylindered diesels. Oddly, both Audi and Peugeot both support the rule changes. So, maybe Mr. Poissenot is telling the truth. What kind of motors will be kosher? 3.4-liter V8s and 2.0-liter turbo whatevers. Just like the LMP2-class is currently. And since that’s the case, LMP2-class cars can only have production based engines. Which is without question, the very best part of this rule change. Come on trickle down theory! [Source: Autoweek]
