And it can handle hella more torque than the original two-speed tranny. The electric sports car company has partnered with Borg Warner of indestructible transmission fame, to produce a single speed gearbox they’re calling Powertrain 1.5. The single speed Borg Warner piece will allow engineers to bump engine torque from 211 lb-ft to 280 lb-ft. That’s no small nudge, and 0-60 times should fall well below the advertised 3.9 seconds as a result. Along with the power increase range has climbed up another 23 miles to 244. And what about all those suckers out there who are stuck (seriously, the company eventually just sold the cars locked in second gear) with the old equipment? The kind souls at Tesla are offering to swap the old two-speed for the new single free of charge. The new Borg Warner piece should quicken production for the company, bumping output from 10 cars a day to 40 by mid next year.
