In our earlier post about the “caught” 2010 E63 AMG Wagon I mentioned that one of the cars a true FiendĀ might mention as the uber-Benz might very well be the AMG Hammer. After thinking about it over breakfast I realized that really, it is the best Benz of all. At least until I digest these waffles. In case you didn’t obsessively inhale buff books in the late 1980s, the AMG Hammer was a 300E with the 5.6-liter V8 from a 560SEC shoved under its hood. This meant it could achieve 60 mph in a tick over 5 seconds, run the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds on its way to a terminal velocity of 186 mph. Those numbers aren’t bad for today and in 1987/1988 they were insane. The hammer was faster in a straight line than, well, everything. Name a car. Porsche 928 S4? Aston Martin V8 Vantage? Ferrari Testarossa? Lamborghini Countach? No, no, no and nyet. Only hyper exotics (Ferrari 288 GTO and F40 and Porsche 959) were faster. But it needs to be pointed out that the Hammer started every time you turned the key and didn’t require a tow truck to follow it around day and night. But don’t think for a moment that the Hammer came cheap. An example with all the options ticked would set you back $160,000 — twenty years ago. Still, the AMG Hammer engendered cars like the E39 M5, Audi RS4 and the new Caddy CTS-V. Essentially muscle sedans with mega-mighty motors shoehorned into smallish engine bays. For that alone we worship at its alter. However, there is a higher power you might consider bowing down to. AMG made a Hammer Wagon with an over-bored 6.0-liter V8. No, really.
