r32 Volkswagen: So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen R32

Sorry Vee Dub fan boys, the company just announced that the beloved R32 won’t make a return appearance for 2009 here in the states. Bring the Scirocco but drop the hot Golf Rabbit — HUH? Well, according to Thomas Wegehaupt, a VW spokesman, the potent AWD hot hatch has been ditched due to the pending arrival of the Mark VI Golf Rabbit. The pint-size should arrive here in the US as a Rabbit with the usual GTI performance package as an option. Of course, our bet is news of the Scirocco’s American arrival as a limited edition model might have a little more to do with the hot hatches demise in the land of the free, home of the dealyed World Series. Are we sad the R32 is out the door? Yep. Are we psyched to (matybe) see the Scirocco hit our shores? Does Sara Palin shit in the woods? [Source: MotorAuthority]

Well, the R32, in its current form, was a bit of a non-starter wasn’t it?

An asking price in range of slick whips like Infiniti Gs and pre-owned Bimmers but with 3/4 the performance and utility of Lan Evos and STIs, a segment to which its be tacitly marketed to. Sounds like a formula to sell only to the core fans and true believers.

Yeah, the price was a deal breaker, which was a shame. This car was a blast to drive on nearly every level. And that exhaust note was to kill for. Straight sex, I say.

R32 was a great deal when you stack it against an EVO MR or STI. Especially when you look at the lease incentives that were going on recently — $400 a month or so. Plus I’d rather sit in those fab leather buckets and stare at a decent looking dash over those cars. And the howl….
