Chrysler Group LLC posted Monday a net profit of $166 million for the first three months of 2013, down nearly 65 percent from the $473 million profit it reported for the first quarter of 2012. CEO Sergio Marchionne said everyone in Auburn Hills knew the quarter would be down because of the disruption caused by the [...]
Marchionne: Chrysler turnaround on track despite slowing profits
Lancia, Dead at 106
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne isn’t one to let the ship sink because of sentimentality. Fiat-Chrysler is projected to lose $900 million in 2012-2014, so Marchionne decided to cut the Lancia nameplate. As Lancia has been one of Italy’s more legendary marques since 1906, this is a sad day.
Auctions: Plymouth XNR concept parks on the auction block [w/video]
The 1960 Plymouth XNR will cross the block next month at the RM Auction in Monterey, Calif. The one-of-a-kind sports car was penned by Chrysler design guru Virgil Exner, who always hoped Chrysler would include a roadster in its lineup. The XNR featured a powerful six-cylinder engine that pumped out 250 horses and gave the [...]
Chrysler files for HFE High Fuel Efficiency trademark
Although Chrysler has remained tight-lipped about any forthcoming changes to its lineup, a patent has been filed by the automaker that does the all the talking.
Tesla Opening Up New Dealerships
GM and Chrysler may be shuttering dealerships around the country as we speak, but electric carmaker Tesla is doing just the opposite. The company plans to open seven new dealers in the U.S. and Europe by the end of this month. As it is, the company only has two dealerships in southern and northern California. [...]
Picture of the Day: Fiat 500
Chrysler’s sale of assets to Fiat has been officially OK’d by bankruptcy court. For Fiends like us, that means just one thing – we’re getting the 500. Aside from a slick-looking gas sipper, the little Italian job is a blast to drive. With a little tweaking courtesy of in-house tuner Abarth, it’s also damn quick. [...]
The Crazy Swede Loses His Ride
With Chrysler doing its best to salvage a viable company from the flames of bankruptcy, it’s no surprise to see sponsorship dollars evaporate. That doesn’t make it suck any less when winning teams lose their ride. Chrysler’s tuning division, Mopar, has ended its relationship with Sam Hubinette, otherwise known as the Crazy Swede. Hubinette has [...]
The Daily Wrap
I. The FIA’s decision to implement a budget-capped class to F1 is likely to meet a significant challenge in the near future. The new measure would introduce a separate class of teams whose annual budget could not exceed $60 million. Teams that chose to run under those rules would be given aerodynamic advantages and would [...]
The Daily Wrap
I. General Motors lost $6 billion in the first quarter of ’09, and managed to spend $10 billion as auto sales plummeted. Even with new management, things don’t look too hot for GM when the June 1 restructuring deadline hits. [Autoweek]
The Daily Wrap
I. Porsche and Volkswagen may soon share space under the same management company, provided their parent company, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, can ok the deal with labor groups. The deal would pretty much put the kabosh on Porsche taking over VW, and would put wither Ferdinand Piech or Wolfgang Porsche in charge of both companies. [...]
Official: Fiat 500 Coming Here
So long as the bankruptcy courts OK Chrysler’s plan for solvency, it looks like we may have our first shot at Fiat’s loveable 500 as soon as 18 months from now. The big C’s plans so far as which Italian models would get the rebadge treatment showed up in court recently and Edmunds was on [...]
Fiat is a Hungry, Hungry Hippo
Fiat just can’t seem to get enough of bad-for-your-health American cuisine. Mere days after Chrysler said the Italian company is interested in partnering up, Fiat confirmed rumors it has its sights set on snapping up General Motors’ European arm. Why? To take over the world, of course! Seriously, though, Fiat wants to meld Chrysler, EU [...]
Top 5 Chrysler Rebadges
Word Chrysler and Fiat have finally saddled up together means we’re in for a whole new generation of rebadged goodness. The house that Hemi built is no stranger to sharing platforms. In fact, some of its best and worst models have been sourced from carmakers around the globe, and to show you what we mean, [...]
It Happened: Chrysler and Fiat Wed
After months, months, months and more months of rumors and lies, it looks like Chrysler and Fiat have finally jumped into bed together. In a press release, Chrysler said it won’t be taking a walk down GM’s path and slice brands left and rice. Instead, the company will keep Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler. It filed [...]
The Daily Wrap
I. It looks like President Obama is getting ready to announce that Chrysler will file for Chapter 11 by Thursday. Obama hopes that the deal with Fiat help carry Chrysler through to building cars people want, but at this point he isn’t sure. [Autoweek]
Picture of the Day: Bye, Pontiac
You’re looking at a 1949 Pontiac Streamliner Deluxe. Honestly, on a day like today, it’s impossible to not pay homage to the dead-brand-selling Pontiac with our POTD. The only question was which car in the company’s long and proud history to run with. The Fiero? Cool, but not legendary. The Chieftan? Awesome, but over played. [...]
Rick Peaces Out
By now you’ve probably heard all about the feds booting GM guru Rick Wagoner. The move came as the new Auto Justice League determined both the General and Chrysler would have to do more to become viable (and dip into the public coffers once more). Bored yet? Yeah, us too. While The Man also dictated [...]
