According to sources inside BMW, 500 Electric Mini Coopers will be built exclusively for use in California. These special Minis will be leased to a select group of customers — no word on how they’ll be picked — though our guess is every green celeb in town will be hounding their publicists to get them on the list. Of the 500, ten will be used as show cars. After being assembled sans drivetrain in the UK, the electric Coopers will have their powertrains fitted in Munich by a new division called Project i established to develop low emission city cars. Why California? Well, CARB (California Air Resources Board) rules require all automakers to sell cars with zero emissions. The limited edition Mini Cooper EVs will wear a special paint job — silver body with yellow roof, definitely will make the Paparazzi’s job easier. Sounds tasty. Sign us up for one please. Just the thing for our commute through Hollywood. [Egmcartech]
