Here’s a mythical beasty in the making. Autobild.de, or as I like to call them, “Adventures in Babelfish,” caught some more pics of the new AMG Gullwing. As the car is three years away, all anyone knows for sure is rumor and speculation. But, here’s our understanding of what the car just might be like. The doors will open like a DeLorean. They’re going to limit to production to around 6,000 units (five times more than say Ferrari F40 production) and the SLC will slot below the McMerc SLR (which is going bye-bye) but above the SL. Most people feel the car won’t be called a Mercedes at all, but rather will be offered as AMG’s first stand alone product. Which is odd considering that the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing basically defines the brand, and AMG looks like AMC to American eyes. The engine will most certainly be a killer version of AMG’s 6.2-liter V8 — figure about 600 hp. There’s also talk that a new twin-turbo V12 could be offered making more than 700 ponies. We like that. Weight should be less than the current SLR — figure about 3,600-3,800 lbs. for the Gullwing. An 8-speed slusher, too. Aside from all that, who knows? Also — love the Michigan plate. [Autobild]
