The recent chatter about high-content, teeny-sized automobiles (like say Fiat 500) has me thinking about one of the wonders of automotive history, the first GTI. Ponder what’s above for a moment. The GTI came with came changing, sports car chasing performance yet didn’t cost a whole lot. Wrap it up in one of the sexiest suits ever penned by Giugiaro and you have not only a terrific car, but one that launched the entire hot hatch segment. We know Levy learned his canyon-bombing ways in a GTI, and I vividly recall my girlfriend nearly squeezing my hand off in the backseat when my buddy took his GTI up to 120 mph on the Richmond Bridge. What a car.
